The story of Rome begins about 1000 B.C., when people first started living on a hill overlooking the tiber river in central italy.
The settlers belonged to a people called latins, who inhabited a region around the tiber called latium.
They were farmers and herders and made their village on hills so that they were easy to defend against neighboring tribes.
The Palatine Hills, where the latins first settled, was just one of seven hills that were later to provide the setting for the magnificent city of rome, the center of one of the greatest empires that the world has ever known.
The Roman government took on my different forms from its centuries-long existence, back to its legendary founding.
For the sake of brevity, this article will skip over its city-state and kingdom periods to focus on its republican and imperial periods.
