Seeing Janie and Tea Cake together upsets the townspeople because they think she moved on too fast. Janie and Tea Cake start to spend time together going to the movies, doing chores and playing checkers.
Where is the money?
Phoeby agrees to go talk to Janie and Janie convinces Phoeby that she is willing to take a chance with Tea Cake because she loves him. Janie tells her that they plan to get married and start a new life somewhere else.
Janie receives a letter from Tea Cake telling her to take a train to Jacksonville. When she arrives they go to a preacher and get married.
One day, Janie sleeps in and Tea Cake doesn't return. While she waits and is getting dressed she notices that her $200 she had hidden were missing. She imagines the worst, but then he returns playing a guitar and singing.
Tea Cake explains that he spent her money buying food to his fellow railroad workers and their wives and bought the guitar. He assures that he will gable the rest and win her money back
For the rest of the week he practices his gambling skills and on Saturday he goes gambling and when he returns he is cut with a razor. He tells Janie he won her money back and $112 plus.
