Montresor is an ordinary citizen of Italy in the 1700s with little money and a great family name. For generations, his kin has built various buildings using bricks and cement and he too is very good at his job. However, he's out for revenge on Fortunato, the great wine connoisseur.
Because of Fortunato's passion, Montresor figures he can find him at the carnival giving wine advice. As he assumed, Montresor finds Fortunato wandering around drunk and stops to talk to him about a cask of Amontillado he acquired.
Hello, my good friend Fortunato. I seem to have come across a cask of Amontillado but I'm not sure if that's what it truly is.
Hello Montresor, my good friend as well! I'm not sure if I can help you since I am a very busy man.
After a little while, Montresor implored Fortunato to come with him to his family's catacombs so Fortunato could sample his Amontillado.
Lead the way, Montresor.
Once Montresor and Fortunato reached their destination, Montresor lead Fortunato down a long staircase until they reached the entrance of the catacombs. Once inside, Montresor opened up a cask of cheap wine and handed some to Fortunato.
Drink up, my friend.
After Fortunato had finished his glass, Montresor set off again, leading Fortunato to the cask of Amontillado. However, after a little while, Fortunato began to develop a cough from the stalagmites.
Yes, it's just a little cough.
Are you alright Fortunato?
What seemed like many hours later, Montresor and Fortunato reached a small opening in the catacombs. By now, Fortunato's cough had gotten much worse and he was having a hard time standing up straight. However, according to Montresor, the cask of Amontillado was just inside the opening.
