  • Conquistadors and South American Conquest
  • Hernan Cortes was a Spanish explorer who had plans to sail to Mexico in search of gold and to conquer the Aztecs and take over the land.
  • I must find gold!
  • Cortes was able to do this expedition because of his rise in local government setting sail to Mexico with 500 men and 11 ships in total.
  • What is that in the distance?
  • Once the conquistadors had arrived in Mexico they had met a woman named Malinche who would serve as a translator between Cortes and the locals. Malinche had later on become the mistress of Cortes and they had a child together.
  • I'm Malinche.
  • I'm Hernan Cortes ... where is the gold though??
  • Quetzacoatl!?!
  • So where is the gold?
  • The Aztecs were very friendly when first meeting the newcomers. they had briefly believed that Cortes was one of their gods called Quetzalcoatl who was supposedly expected to arrive from the sea around the same time Cortes had.
  • Help me take down the Aztecs
  • In search of people to help him overthrow the Aztecs Cortes had allied himself with the Tlaxcala and Cholula tribes.
  • On November 8th, 1519 conquistadors reached the Aztec capital and took the Aztec leader Montezuma Hostage. This left the Aztec people in a panicked state and resulted in Montezuma being killed by being stoned to death. In 1521 two years after Cortes landed the Aztec Capital had fallen and was conquered by Cortes.
  • The End
