Columbus set sail to find Asia with a total of three ships and a combined crew of 90 men. In total he had made four trips to the New World.
Columbus landed off the coast of the Bahamas and truly believed he had made it to India. He later would set up a fortress that he had called La Navidad where around 38 of his men stayed while he had made his trip back home.
I made it to India!
In the year 1492 explorer Christopher Columbus had plans to go on a voyage in search of Asia.
You must be Indians
Initial interactions between Columbus and the locals went well. He had given them red hats along with beads in exchange for parrots, gold, and a few people. Columbus then went home to share his discoveries.
When Columbus had returned to the Bahamas he had plans to enslave the natives as well as convert them to Christianity. He had not only brought over priests to do this but also dogs as a way to strike fear in the natives and use them to attack.
We must convert them.
Here we are!
Columbus had taken over what he had thought was India and brutally tortured, killed and enslaved the natives. Over three million natives were killed by the early 1500s.
