Scout learns about tolerance through many different ways, a good example of this would be what she learns indirectly from the way Atticus acts. A specific example of this would be when Bob Ewell threatens and spits on Atticus, instead of acting violently and impulsively he simply takes it
He believes that it is better that Bob Ewell takes his anger out on him and not his children. This shows Scout that even though it might not be fair, you should try to be tolerant and calm.
So if spitting in my face and threatening me saved Mayella Ewell one extra beating, that's something I'll gladly take. He had to take it out on somebody and I'd rather it be me than that houseful of children out there.
