  • That is  cool. Didn't they command for state and national governments to prohibit alcohol?
  • In 1826, The Temperance  Movement began in American Protestant Churches
  • Shortly after  the issue rose a group called the Washingtonians  was formed.
  • Also, the group consisted of  recovering alcoholics and claimed it was a disease and needed to be treated.
  • German and Irish immigrants opposed the movement
  • correct!
  • There was nothing for them to do because the government had more power over them, right?
  • Even factory owners joined the prohibition of alcohol.
  • Didn't they believe it would reduce crime and poverty?
  • Was Maine the first state to  prohibit the manufacturing of  intoxicating alcohol?
  • Yes, and twelve states followed their lead.
  • The temperance  movement was soon overshadow by issues  of slavery
