Jonas an 11 year old boy is getting nervous because its almost December. In December, children 1-12 have ceremony, each ceremony is different. But the 12 ceremony is one of the most important because the year 12's get assigned jobs that they will do for the rest of their lives.
Jonas gets assigned Receiver of Memory
A "new child", Gabriel, is brought home by Jonas's father for extra nurturing because he is not behaving well and wants to help him catch up so next year he'll be assigned a family unit.
One night, Jonas had a dream about a girl named Fiona and wanted her to get into a tub, but she wouldn't take him seriously. These are called the stirrings and now Jonas has to take a pill every day so they wont come back.
When the ceremony of 12 comes up Jonas is nervous cause he doesn't know what he'll be. But when his number comes up the elder skips Jonas's number and everyone is confused. The elder say Jonas is special and he is assigned receiver of memory.
After a little while of talking to the Giver, he tells Jonas to lay down on the bed. When he does, the giver shows Jonas a memory of a sled ride and Jonas experiences snow.
Jonas see's that Fiona hair changed some how and told the giver. The Giver explained that there wasn't always sameness. The first color Jonas learns is red and all the other colors as the weeks go by.
