The Cubans wanted to rebel against Spain because of the government and economy. The Americans refused to help the Cubans when they asked. So the Cubans lit the Americans' sugar cane on fire.

On February 15, the U.S.S. Maine got exploded and it killed almost 250 Americans. The Americans blamed the Spanish.
Treaty of Paris
Cuba gets their independence. Spain gives Puerto Rico, Guam, and The Philippines to America in return for $20 million.
The Americans all wanted war but not President William McKinley, he wanted peace. Though most of America wanted to fight, McKinley maintained the peace.
Guam, The Philippines, and Puerto Rico
America wanted compensation ($) for the USS Maine, an end to reconcentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence. Spain accepted all but the last one. The US declared war.
In December 1898, the U.S. signs The Treaty of Paris with Spain. Spain recognizes Cuban independence.
Puerto Rico, Guam, and The Philippines were given to America from Spain in return for $20 million. This was another agreement in The Treaty of Paris.
