Storyboard Text

  • The ancient Babylonians were the first people to solve for the area of a circle, estimating it around 3.125 (1900-1680 BC)
  • The area of a circle is found by three x the radius! Pi = 3.125!
  • Pi equals 3.1605!
  • The ancient Egyptians were the next people to calculate pi.
  • Archimedes of Syracuse calculated pi by using the Pythagorean Theorem to find the area of two regular polygons and knew the area of the circle was somewhere between that range.
  • Pi ~ 3 7/10 - 3 10/71
  • pi = 355/113!
  •  Zu Chongzhi calculated pi by an inscribed 24,576-gon and did long equations with square roots going out to the 9th decimal place
  • While all of these people were brilliant mathematicians, none of them were quite correct. What pi equals (or at least some of it!) is shown in the next text box
