Bartolomeu Dias was an explorer and his voyages were funded by the Portuguese. He explored the coast of Africa and found a cape which is a strip of land that juts out into the water. His explorations were important because they paved the way for future exploration to India and the rest of Asia.
Vasco Da Gama was another explorer who's voyages were funded by the Portuguese. He explored the East coast of Africa by rounding the cape of good hope then he found an Indian pilot that showed him how to get to India. This was important because now the Portuguese could now have access to Asia and India.
Pedro Cabral sailed for Portugal. He used the same route that Da Gama took to get to India but instead he went to far West and hit the shores of Brazil. He claimed Brazil for the king and went to India and game back with spices and other goods. His sailing was important because when he found Brazil it gave Portugal a foothold in the Americas.
Christopher Columbus was an explorer and his voyages were funded by the Spanish. He sailed West because he believed that the world was much smaller and so if he sailed West he would reach the East Indies. So when he sailed West he reached the Americas and thought it was East India so he called the natives the Indians. His exploration was important because it helped with the discovery that the Americas were a separate continent.
Amerigo Vacpuci was an explorer who's voyages were funded by the Spanish. He explored the coast of South America and realized that South America was it's own continent and wasn't part of Asia. His exploration was important because it helped the Europeans realize that the Americas were not a part of Asia.
Ferdinand Megalan was an explorer sailing for Spain he sailed around the tip of South America. He died in the Philippines, but his crew sailed onward and sail around the world. His exploration was important because it gave them a better understanding of the world around them.
