  • Meeting of the Estates General
  • The Third Estate refuses to consent to the abolition of the sale of offices unless the nobles surrendered some of their privileges !
  • What shall we do about our government?
  • No, it is our given right to have these privileges. Surrendering will not solve our problem. The nobility and clergy should not be overpowered by a laboring class!
  • Tennis Court Oath
  • The requirements of the oath are
  • Never to separate and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established
  • Storming of the Bastille
  • Stop this at once !
  • Attack !
  • France was in a deep financial crisis so the King finally decided to summon the Estates General. The king had them vote by order. The third estate consisted of Bourgeoisie, Artisans, and Peasants. This was a move away from democracy.
  • The March on Versailles
  • Bread !
  • They pledged the tennis court oath. They took the three estates and became known as the National Assembly where all estates became one huge group. The first written constitution of France was called the French Constitution of 1791. This was a move towards democracy.
  • The Reign of Terror
  • Let every traitor meet their death !
  • On July 14, 1789 rumors of the royal troops roaming the capital put the Parisians on high alert. The Parisians eventually stormed the prison of Bastille thinking they had weapons or gun powder. The commander of Bastille opened on the crowd, but the enraged group stormed in to find nothing. This was the start of the revolution. This was a step towards democracy.
  • The Rise of Napoleon

  • On October 5, nearly 7,000 women walked 13 miles from Paris to Versailles. As they yelled "bread" demanding to see the king. The king gave in and moved the Tuileries palace, but he also made a promise to stay so they can easily access him. This was a step towards democracy.
  • We demand to see the king !
  • Robespierre took control after Louis XVI was put in jail. Over 40,000 people were killed by the guillotine including Louis XVI and his wife. This happened after the first French republic. This was a step away from democracy.
  • Cut off their heads !
  • Napoleon is known for being a "French hero" he started in Military success at the age of 14. After winning most of his battles for France he becomes emperor with the people's vote. He also created new government that reforms the revolution. This was a step towards democracy.
