  • HIS name is Galileo Galilei, he learned that a Butch lens maker had built an instrument that could  enlarge far-off objects
  • He built his own telescope and used it to study heavens in 1609
  • His discoveries with the telescope revolutionized astronomy and paved the way for the acceptance of the Copernican heliocentric system, but his advocacy of that system eventually resulted in an Inquisition process against him.
  • Galileo Galilei, a scientist who questioned everything the church had to say
  • He said, "Get ready for a revolution but the church didn't listen"
  • I would like to use experiment to obtain the truth
  • In 1616, the Catholic Church warned Galileo not to defend the ideas of Copernicus which was the idea that the sun stood at the center of the universe
  • Galileo announced that Jupiter had four moons and that the sun had dark spots  
  • His findings frightened both Catholic and Protestant because they went against the church teaching and authority 
  • His observation and law of motion supported the theories of Copernicus.
  • In 1632, Galileo published "Dialogue concerning two chief world systems". This book presented the ideas of Copernicus and Ptolemy, but it clearly showed that he supported Copernican theory.
  • The pope angrily summoned Galileo to Rome to stand trail before the Inquisition
  • Galileo stood before the court in 1633. Under the threat of torture, he knelt before the cardinal and read aloud a signed confession 
  • He agreed that the ideas of Copernicus were false.
  • Galileo was never again a free man. He lived under house arrest and died in 1642 at his villa near Florence. However, his books and ideas still spread all over Europe.
