The date is set as June 27th, and it gives us an idea of an event called the lottery. It also gives us a scene of children gathering and protecting rocks. Overall, not much is happening and it looks like a normal day.
Mr.Summers comes to town with a black box in hand. He lists off names and waits for missing people. After the chatter dies out, he begins adding names to the box.
The lottery starts happening, as people being drawing slips of paper in alphabetical order. Each person comes up to the box as a representative of their household to draw. After everyone draws, the villagers open their slips.
After everyone is finished, they all open their slips of paper. Tessie finds out that her family has been chosen, and attempts to plead that the drawing wasn't fair. However, they continue and Tessie is chosen for the lottery.
After being chosen, all of the townsfolk begin to prepare. The children begin to gather rocks stashed earlier while the adults escort Tessie to the middle of a square. They then back up and prepare to execute Tessie.
Tessie begins to plead for mercy. The villagers, undeterred, begin executing Tessie by stoning. Tessie attempts to fend for herself, as the cries out, "It isn't right!" Tessie then dies.
