  • "‘No’ said Bruno. ‘I don’t understand why we’re not allowed on the other side of it. What’s so wrong with us that we can’t go over there and play?’ Gretel stared at him and then suddenly started laughing, only stopping when she saw that Bruno was being perfectly serious. ‘Bruno’, he said in a childish voice, as if this was the most obvious thing in the world, ‘the fence isn’t there to stop us from going over there. It’s to stop them from coming over here.’" (Boyne 181-182). This conversation shows how Bruno has no idea what's going on.

  • Pavel is not a doctor any more, Bruno,’ Said Maria quietly. ‘But he was. In another life. Before he came here.’ Bruno frowned and thought about it. ‘I don’t understand,’ he said. ‘Few of us do,’ said Maria. (Boyne 137) This conversation shows that Maria knows that she is being treated differently because she is jewish.

  • ‘Does the marching go on for long?’ He whispered because he was beginning to feel quite hungry now. ‘I don’t think so,’ said Shmuel. ‘I never see the people they’ve gone on a march. But I wouldn't imagine it does.’ (Boyne 211) .         This quote shows that the boys do not understand what is happening but the reader knows that based on what Shmuel says that the boys wont be coming back.
