In this time era, blacks weren't allowed to go to restaurants or places with the whites, because of the Jim Crow Laws in play. The whites are segregating even though the blacks are freedmen. According to the 14th amendment they are also fully citizens.
In this scene, the Bus driver is telling this black man to go in the back where he belongs in the black section. Even though the 13th amendment states that slavery is abolished. Still, The whites treat them as slaves. Also according to Plessy vs Furguson it states that "Separate but equal facilities". It was hard after reconstruction for the whites to change their old ways, by having slaves. This kept on happening because the blacks were just too lenient.
This cross being burned is a lynching created by the Ku Klux Klan. The Ku Klux Klan is being radical. The Ku Klux Klan did this even though according to the Civil Rights Act of 1866 The colored were granted the same rights enjoyed by white citizens and still the whites didn't beleive that and kept terrorizing the lives of blacks.
