  • The Convention
  • In 1786, delegates from 5 states met in Annapolis, Maryland. They discussed ways to promote trade among their states. The Annapolis delegates, lead by Alexander Hamilton,  later called for representatives to go to Philadelphia the following May.
  • George Washington!
  • We need to elect a president now.
  • The Virginia Plan
  • The 55 delegates who attended the Constitutional Convention were known as a very impressive group. Some were lawyers, doctors, merchants, etc. Some of the delegates included James Madison, Benjamin Franklin and even George Washington.
  • Great! Let's here it.
  • I have an idea! It's called the Virginia Plan
  • The Great Compromise
  • The delegates arrived to the Constitutional Convention without a clue of what to expect. Some had ideas but they all agreed the government should protect people's rights. The challenge that faced the delegates was how to set up a strong but limited government.
  • We can combine both and call it the Great Compromise
  • I have another plan
  • Well we need to come up with a compromise
  • First thing they did was elect a president for the convention. All the delegates voted for Washington. At their next meeting they discussed the rules for the convention.
  • They started designing the the new national government. Edmund Randolph offered a plan called the Virginia Plan (The Virginia Plan)
  • New Jersey delegate, William Paterson, presented alternative called New Jersey Plan. The committee came up with plan called the the Great Compromise which was a combination of both plans. (The great compromise)
