  • In 1854, the U.S. attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. Spain stated that they'd rather see Cuba sink into the ocean. 
  • Spain
  • Jose Marti, a cuban poet and journalist in exile in New York, started a revolution in 1895 against Spain. Distroying lots of property, most of it was American owned. He devoted his life to making sure Cuba's people was free. 
  • Spain
  • America sent the USS Maine ship to Cuba to pick up endangered Americans and bring them back to their homeland. After exploding on February 15th, 1898, the tragedy of the ship was blamed on the Spanish.
  • The Spanish American War was declared on April 20th, 1848 and lasted six months. A group called the Rough Riders  who were apart of the American side of the war. Their leaders, Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt. Though he played a minor role in the group, Roosevelt was declared a war hero and became the president soon after that. 
  • America
  • STOP! We need to discontinue this war, it isn't helping. 
  • The wars fighting lasted fifteen weeks. Eventually, a ceasefire agreement was signed between the U.S. and Spain on August 12th called the "splendid little war". 
  • Fine, we must make an agreement's paper. 
  • The debate consisted on whether or not the U.S. had the right to annex the Philippines. The debate was settled with the senate's approval on February 6th, 1899.  Some people later felt that the treaty violated the Declaration of Independence.
