In 1854 the U.S. attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. Spain said that they'd rather see the country sink into the sea.
Jose Marti, a Cuban poet, used guerrilla warfare to destroy property of the U.S. In 1895 he started a revolution against Spain.
The U.S.S. Maine is a ship that was sent to Cuba to rescue American citizens. The ship exploded before it could complete its mission. (February 15,1898)

The Debate of the Treaty of Paris argued whether or not the U.S. had a right to annex the Philippines . On Feb. 6,1899 the annexation question was settled with the Senates' approval.
