Storyboard Text

  • In 1854 the U.S. attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. Spain said that they'd rather see the country sink into the sea.
  • Jose Marti, a Cuban poet, used guerrilla warfare to destroy property of the U.S. In 1895 he started a revolution against Spain.
  • The U.S.S. Maine is a ship that was sent to Cuba to rescue American citizens. The ship exploded before it could complete its mission. (February 15,1898) 
  • Although the explosion was an accident, America used Yellow Journalism to blame it on the Spaniards. 
  • April 20, 1898, America declares war with Spain. The Rough Riders were the only people of 3 cavalries to see any action in that war.
  • A ceasefire agreement was signed by the two countries on 8/12/1898. In December, 1898 both countries discuss their treaty. Spain frees Cuba, sells the Philippines to the U.S. and gives Guam and Puerto Rico to them. 
  • The Debate of the Treaty of Paris argued whether or not the U.S. had a right to annex the Philippines . On Feb. 6,1899 the annexation question was settled with the Senates' approval.
