  • Diploments reconmended to President Franklin Pierce that the U.S. buy Cuba from Spain. Cuban revolt against Spain was not successful. In 1886 the Cuban people forced Spain to abolish slavery.
  • His revolution was based around guerrilla war tactics.
  • Jose Marti was Cuban poet and journalist who launched a revolution against Spain in 1895.
  • He was kicked out of Cuba at the age of 16 due to his revolutionary activities.
  • On February 15, 1898 the U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor in Cuba. Over 260 men were killed. Yellow journalism is journalism that is based upon sensationalism and crude exaggeration.
  • On April 20th 1898 America declared war on Spain. The war lasted 6 months, but fighting only lasted 15 weeks. A cease-fire was signed on August 12, 1898 and on December 10, 1898 a peace treaty was signed.
  • Spain freed Cuba and gave the United States: Guam and Puerto Rico. Spain also sold the Philippines to the United States for $20 million.
  • The problem was that the U.S. is a democracy, and imperialism goes against the principles of democracy. On February 6, 1899 the senate approved the Treaty of Paris. The U.S. empire included Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines.
