  • In 1854 the U.S. attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. Spain stated that they would rather see Cuba sink in the Ocean.
  • Jose Marti the Cuba National Hero and important figure in Latin American literature. He dedicated his life to achieving freedom for the Cuba. 
  • On February 15, 1898 the U.S.S. Maine exploded in Havana Harbor
  • Although the explosion was an accident, U.S. newspapers blamed the incident on Spain. Yellow journalism led to the Spanish-American War
  • April 20 the United States declared war on Spain. 
  • Theodore Roosevelt was one of the leaders of the Rough Riders and became president of the U.S.
  • A treaty that stopped the American and Spanish war.
  • The debate regarding the ratification of the treaty polarized the Senate on imperialism and nation's future role in Cuba and the Philippines
