“In case you’re tempted to break the rules, understand that I did make a copy of these tapes. Throughout the tapes, I’ll be mentioning several spots around our beloved city for you to visit. If you’d like a little more insight, just head for the stars.” (p.9-10, 12)
I can't believe she did it!
Clay receives a package at his house with his name on it, and Clay takes it in. Inside are 7 different tapes, with numbers on each side. Clay soon realizes that these were Hannah's suicide tapes
Key Event #2
Who's tape are you listening to?
Hannah on the tapes explains that she had killed herself for 13 different reasons, each one being a classmate or friend, and she talks about what they have done. She also tells them about a map, and going to certain locations to see what had happened there.
Propelling the Next Action
Is that what you meant to say, Hannah? Those are very serious words, you know. I know you can’t sum it all up. It’s the snowball effect, am I right? (p.272-273)
After Clay realizes that he's listening to Hannah's suicide tapes, Clay decides to just keep all of the tapes,so he can learn what happened and why she killed herself, because he had feelings for Hannah. Unfortunately, Clay soon realizes that his name is on one of the tapes.
The New Outcome
I miss Hannah.
Clay keeps going around town, learning about what had happened at each spot on the map, and just as he reached the last tape, he learns something else about Hannah that was very interesting.
Hannah is talking to her guidance counselor, Mr. Porter about her depression, and even about suicide, but she wants him to help her. She really wants his help, but just can't figure out why she's so depressed
I need it to stop. I need everything to stop. People. Life. I don’t want want my life to end. That’s why I’m here.
At the end of the tapes, Hannah is talking to Mr. Porter, telling him that she has been feeling very depressed, and even talking about suicide. Even though there are multiple reasons, she just can’t sum it up. Mr. Porter classifies it as the “snowball effect.” This scene is when Clay listens to the last few tapes in Rosie's, while Tony tries to help him.
