American Interest in Cuba : * In 1854 the U.S attempted to buy Cuba from Spain. The Spaniards stated they would rather see it sank in the ocean.
Jose Marti : * Cuban poet and journalist in exile in New York, launched a revolution in 1895. Cubans began to fight to reach independence.
U.S.S Maine/Yellow Journalism : The U.S.S. Maine was in Cuba to protect U.S. citizens.The ship blew up in the harbor of Havana on February 15, 1898. More than 260 men were killed. Newspapers claimed that Spanish had blown up the ship.
Spanish American War/Rough Riders : War started in April 20, 1898 to help Cuba with its independence. It lasted 6 months. Rough riders won the battle of San Juan, lead by Theodore Roosevelt.
Treaty of Paris : The U.S and Spain signed on armistice, a case-fire agreement on August 12 ending what secretary state John Hay called "Splehaid Little War" . U.S received Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines & Cuba gained freedom.
Debate over the Treaty of Paris : Arguments centered on whether or not the U.S had the right to annex the Philippines (imperialism was the real issue).
