  • In 1854 the U.S attempted to buy Cuba from Spain.  Spain stated that they they'd rather see Cuba sink into the ocean
  • Jose Marti was a poet who devoted his whole life so that the people in Cuba could be freed 
  • Although the explosion was an accident U.S newspapers falsely blamed Spain for the incident.
  • On April 20th, 1898 the U.S declared war. The war lasted for 6th months. The leaders of the rough riders were Teddy Roosevelt and Lenard Wood.
  • The U.S and Spain signed a cease fire agreement. On December 10, 1898 they meet in Paris to agree on a treaty that frees Cuba 
  • It argued whether or not the U.S had the right to annex the Philippines. Some people felt that the treaty violated the deceleration of independence, it was settled on February 6, 1899
