  • In 1854, America tried to buy Cuba from Spain. Spain replied that they'd rather see the country sink.  
  • It is here that the bad blood between the U.S. and Spain began.
  • José Marti, a Cuban journalist, becomes the leader of the rebellion for Cuba's freedom
  • During his rebellion, he had a history destroying mostly American property.
  • Journalists in America use yellow journalism to exaggerate  the events and urge America to want war.
  • February 15, 1898, the U.S.S. Maine has accidentally  exploded in Havana, Cuba and the U.S. blames Spain.
  • America declares war against Spain, April  20, 1898, that lasts only six months.
  • The Rough Riders, critically acclaimed as war heroes, only play a small part during the war
  • The war ends and the  U.S. and Spain sign a peace treaty in Paris, December 10, 1898
  • Cuba is freed, Puerto Rico and the islands of Guam are given to the U.S., and the  Philippines  are sold to the U.S.
  • Americans now question whether  or not it is ethical to annex the Philippines into the U.S.
