She went to the first house she saw and noticed some familiar faces. I was the Van Wagener' home. Their mother greeted her.
Issac and his sister arrived home shortly after. Truth explained to them what had happened and why she was there. They listened and gave her employment
Well, Bell, so you've run away from me.
No, I did not run away; I walked away by daylight, and all because you had promised me a year of my time.
Not long after, Truth's old master, Dumont, appeared.
Well, I shall take the child
You must go back with me.
No, I won't go back with you.
Mr. Isaac S. Van Wagener intervened
After this deal was made, Dumont departed.
Fine. Twenty for Isabelle and five in addition for the child
I have never been in the practice of buying and selling slaves, but I do not believe in slavery. Rather than taking Isabella back, I will buy her services for the year.
When her master arrived to take Truth back, claiming that she had run away from him, she talked back to him saying that she hadn’t run away from him but walked away because that was what she was promised. Talking back to your master as an enslaved person wasn’t common at that time. On a spectrum of resistance, this isn’t as severe as other forms of resistance but was still seen as a great form of it. This was a major part of her resistance since she refused orders and talked back.
