  • Around 100 men and boys were sent to find gold, but however weren’t able to complete their goal. This then lead to the establishment of Jamestown in 1607.
  • Help from the Powhatan Indians and the “Starving Time” (1609 - 1610)
  • Due to the fact that the men weren’t able to find gold, people then started to settle in Jamestown which was near a river. They were also away from the Native Americans and Spaniards.

  • However,they location of Jamestown where the soil was mushy, dirty water, poor soil, etc.. lead to the many deaths of colonists from hunger and diseases..

  • The Powhatan Indians had decided to teach the colonists how to hunt, farm, and fish. John Smith was really strict on the colonists telling them that they could either work or starve. He then returned to England causing Jamestown to fall apart. During the winter of 1609 -1610 was called the “Starving Time” since only 60 of 300 settlers were still alive.
  • After the “Starving Time” a survivor named John Rolfe hand found tobacco seeds. This had the produced a taste that the English enjoyed and was also the large source of income in Virginia at that time.
  • African slaves where then transported from the West Indies to work on large farms also known as plantations in 1619. During this year the colonists would choose men to speak for Jamestown in the House of Burgesses which was one of the first representative government in the English colonies in America.
