  • Falling Action
  • Hello, police!
  • One day as Maya was observing the otters, she felt watched. Soon after, she was banned from going to Riley Bay. Though she didn't listen, Maya went out and noticed someone getting attacked in the bay. She eventually found out it was her dad and rushed to help. After he almost drowned, Maya came and saved him. Both Maya and her dad found out they were attacked by poachers and decided to try and catch them.
  • Resolution
  • Maya, her dad, and her brother went along with their plan, but it failed. Though, later while Maya was kayaking she approached strange men trying to capture sea urchins. Maya got pictures of the men and showed them to her brother. They concluded that one of the poachers was the coast guard Mark and they were shocked.
  • Theme
  • Maya checked on the otters and noticed they were trapped in mesh bags. As she went to help them, she heard the sound of a boat and realized it was the poachers. After a long while of trying to escape and save the otters, the two poachers in the boat got stuck, and couldn't move. Another poacher who was scuba diving also got caught and was unable to hurt the otters.
  • As the poachers stay trapped and unable to move, the police come and arrest them. Her dad then vowed to tell her the truth, since he failed to mention the poachers. Maya was now ready for people to know about the existence of the sea otters in Riley Bay, she trusted them and didn't have to worry about their safety.
  • Even if you are underestimated, you can still do what you put your mind to.  In the story Maya is underestimated by her family, they think she is too young to make an impact on the animals lives. Though, her love for the sea otters drove her to not give up, as she and her brother caught the poachers.
