In review, there were 3 main reasons for the creation of Georgia.
Economics- The colonists grew plants that England could not grow. That made a lot of money.
Defense- South Carolina was very important to England. There were Spanish people in Florida, and so they established Georgia between the two places. The colonists protected South Carolina from the Spanish & Indians.
Philanthropy- James Oglethorpe wanted to help the poor people in England. This never actually happened, however.
When James, the King, and 20 other people got together to form Georgia, they created the Charter of 1732.
James Oglethorpe first gave King George the idea. He became one of 21 trustees and was in control once they got to America.
Charter of 1732 -Trustees are in charge -Colonists get 50 acres of land, tool. and food for a year. -Must defend the colony -Must grow grapes, indigo plants, and mulberry trees (silk) -No Catholics, slaves, liquor sales, and/or lawyers -Georgia will remain a Trustee Colony for 21 years
Highland Scots- Scottish warriors recruited because of their fighting skills. They settled in Darien, and brought the 1st Presbyterian church, and defended the colony on multiple occasions.
Salzburgers- German-speaking people who founded New Ebenezer. They created the 1st Lutheran church, sunday school, and orphanage.
Jewish: European Jews who stayed in Savannah. They brought the 1st Doctor, Dr. Samuel Nuñez, and the Jewish church & culture.
3 groups of people, other than the original English, came over also.
Tomochichi and Mary Musgrove played important parts in establishing Georgia. Without Mary translating, Tomochichi would not have known James did not want to hurt them. He might have thought James was trying to attack them, and hurt James and the English. Tomochichi was also very helpful because he helped James Oglethorpe and the colonists settle. He was very nice and the settlement was peaceful.
