Douglass, Henry and John get caught by the police and the watchman trying to escape slavery. John was refusing to be tied up and making the officer mad. So he pulled out his gun and said he was going to shoot John. So John said “shoot me I'm not gonna be tied up”. Then the officer tackled John and the scrum was on, luckily Douglass got rid of his protection and was safe. If he didn't throw it away he would be put in jail for a long time.
Later back at Mr. Freelands, Henry and John still had their protection and didn't know what to do with it. Douglass said “shhh, if you get caught with them we will be done for, put them in a fire and never ever mention them again”. “Ok”, said Henry and John. Douglass, John and Henry are really lucky that they didn't get caught. John and Henry said “whew that was a close one”. Douglass looks of into the distance and said “yes it was”. Still Douglass was lucky he was not in jail but he was still a slave.
Douglass thought for sure he was going to be sent to Alabama by Captain Auld. The reason why he would not want to be sent to Alabama is because its farther south and the slave owners are meaner and its harder to escape from so far south. Surprisingly Douglass gets sent to Baltimore to learn a trade with Captain Aulds brother Hugh. Douglass wonders why he did this because Douglass thinks that Captain Auld knows he tried to escape. Douglass learns that he has to be more secretive about escaping slavery and be more careful of who he trusts. Douglass will still not give up, he will escape slavery and become a free man!
