After, Douglass left Covey's plantation because the Aulds rented him to a new slave owner named Mr.Freeland. He was nicer than Covey but was still very mean. After a long time at Mr.Freelands, Douglass was done with being a slave and wanted freedom. Douglass made a Sabbath school that taught slaves how to read. At the Sabbath school Douglass teaches about freedom and that the slaves should have it. While he's there Douglass meets two other slaves named Henry and John. After the Sabbath school was shut down by Mr.Freeland, Douglass Henry and John were determined to escape slavery.
The slaves started thinking of ways to escape slavery. Douglass was going to give up but Henry and John gave Douglass hope. Henry said “come on Douglass we can do it, just believe in yourself.” “Yes!” said John, “Allright, I won’t give up yet” said Douglass. After that they had many ideas. Most of them had many challenging obstacles, like one they had to go to New York, hide from slave catchers and be in danger. That would be very scary! But Douglass, Henry and John would not stop thinking about their plans.
Douglass said “Finally we got an idea”. “Yeah” said John and Henry! The slaves thought of the best idea possible to give them best chance at escaping slavery. Douglass said “I will write the protections”. John and Henry said they would get the canoe. They were all excited that they could escape slavery. The plan was to get on the canoe, paddle out on the river, show the officer their protections or fake IDs, and then escape slavery and be gone for good. At least that was how it was supposed to happen.
