  • Did you know that EM Waves can be both harmful and beneficial?
  • How is that possible, teacher?
  • EM waves like ultraviolet waves can be harmful as it can cause cell complications like skin cancer and sunburns.
  • But still, UV radiation is widely used in industrial processes and in medical and dental practices for a variety of purposes.
  • Gamma rays are used in medicine, industry, and the nuclear industry. However, gamma rays cause damage at a cellular level and are penetrating, causing diffuse damage throughout the body.
  • X-rays are really helpful for detecting complications in the body but...
  • X-rays, when exposed to high amounts of radiation, may cause cancer, hair loss, and the loss of skin and hair.
  • Radio waves however are not particularly dangerous but if the radiation is absorbed by the body in large enough amounts, it can produce heat. This can lead to burns and body tissue damage.
  • Microwaves are helpful for cooking foods but radiation can heat body tissues the same way it heats food. Exposure to high levels of microwaves can cause a painful burn.
