  • The Great PlagueBy: Charis
  • The Great Plague-What is It?
  • The great plague was also known as the black death or bubonic plague.
  • The black plague was caused by Bacterium Yersinia pestis, a type of bacteria. The disease was carried from rodents to humans by the bite of infected fleas.
  • Where and When did this Migration take Place?
  • The plague spread all over Asia and Europe.
  • Where we are in Place and Time
  • 1347
  • The plague first arrived in Europe in 1347 when 12 ships from the Black Sea docked at the Sicilian port of Messina.
  • It was a disease that had killed more than 30 million people.
  • What were the Push and Pull Factors?
  •  The great plague started in 1347 then faded away in the early 1350s.
  • Perspective
  •  After a while, the government of those countries stopped allowing anybody in or out to stop the disease spreading as much.
  • People fled to the countryside but the disease followed.
  • Essential services were collapsing and the people knew they had to go somewhere else with better living conditions.
  • The plague is so easy to get and so many people are dying!
  • All the cattle is dying so there is not enough food!
  • Other countries were afraid of catching the disease so they would reject or even kill people that they knew came from a country with the black death.
  • Get out of our city! We don't want your sickness.
  • But we don't want to stay in that terrible country!
