How did the stamp act start?
How it ended
In an effort to raise funds to pay off debts and defend the vast new American territories won from the War, the British government passes the Stamp Act on March 22, 1765
The majority considered it a violation of their rights as Englishmen to be taxed without their consent—consent that only the colonial legislatures could grant.
The issues raised by the Stamp Act festered for 10 years before giving rise to the Revolutionary War and, ultimately, American independence.
