Many African Americans founded churches that became the center of their communities
We have finally established a Black church, a safe place for all!
After the war there was a rise of Black Politicians and Governers
I am Hiram Revels, and I am the first black governer
Even though African Americans were legally free, many didn't want them to be a part of society, and tried to block them from doing certain activities
Hey!! I can legally vote!!
Not if we can help it!!
Many African Americans began to improve their lives by exercising their right to vote. They also founded churches and schools to teach many illiterate blacks. They also reunited with many family members who were separated by slavery
Now that African Americans were free, they could actively engage in politics more. Although there weren't many Black politicians, it was a step forward to reaching equality. The first Black senator was Hiram R. Revels
After the war, there was rise in hate groups, and the most notorious of the groups is the KKK. They wanted to end the Republican party, aid the planter class (many planters made up the KKK), and to prevent African Americans from voting or excrersising their rights
