As the new breed of longhorns came to Texas,they had many advantages.The longhorn cattle were well suited and could eat different kinds of things.For example,they could endure hot and cold weather.They could even eat prickly pear cacti.Not only that,but the cattle were resistant to a common disease called the ''Texas Fever''.Furthermore,the cattle helped after the war.By the end of the civil war,about 5 million cattle roamed the state.
The oil companies were important to the Texas economy.They employed thousands of Texans,which in turn helped boost many of the state’s businesses. Also,the discovery of the huge oil field soon affected oil prices.As a result,the price of oil dropped.By 1902,the prices were as low as three cents a barrel.By 1904,Spindletop was producing only 10,000 barrels of oil a day.
There were about 470 miles if rail lines in Texas.The U.S. even had a transcontinental railroad.Which is a railroad that runs across a continent.Community leaders offered to fund,or help pay for,railroad construction.Therefore,many cities issued bonds to help pay for rail construction. Although,the Constitution of 1876,banned he bonds,but allowed the the legislature to pass a general land grant law.For every continuous mile,a company could recieve 16 square miles of land.Texas eventually gave more than 32 million acres of land for more than 40 railroad companies.
