  • John Brown-Kansas
  • In 1855 Brown followed five of his sons to the Kansas Territory to assist antislavery forces struggling for control there, a conflict that became known as Bleeding Kansas.
  • Brown settled in Osawatomie and soon became the leader of antislavery guerrillas in the area.
  • Established stronghold for escaping slaves (1859)
  • Held 60 whites as hostage, hoping that slaves would join the rebellion, captures a government armory and gets himself captured and hanged.
  • Expedited the formation of Civil War, became a, “legend”, in the North (Union)
