  • My name was Cornelis de Houtman. In 1596 I led Dutch ships and arrived in Banten, West Java, Indonesia.
  • On March 20, 1620, VOC (Verenidge Oost Indische Compagnie) was formed by the Dutch. It means Trade Association of East Indies.

  • VOC had special right:- VOC may build armies & forts- VOC may make wars, peace and agreement with foreign kings- VOC may make its own currency.
  • I, Jan Pieter Zoen Coen (Head of VOC) in 1619 implemented the monopoly and hongi navigation policies.In that year VOC took over Jayakarta harbour and changed the name to Batavia and become headquarter of VOC.
  • In 1799 VOC was shutdown, because VOC had large loss from fighting Indonesian's rebel people.All VOC properties were taken over by the Dutch goverment.
  • Under Dutch colonization, there were three policies made Indonesian poor people even more miserable:1.Forced PLanting (Tanam Paksa)2.Taxation (Pengenaan Pajak)3.Forced Labour (Kerja Paksa)
