On September 5th, the integration finally began but, the day was cut short because a mob of segregationists chased them down the block and Mother Lois told Melba to start the car and don't stop driving and Melba declined which made her Mother slap her across the face.

On Melba's first official day of school the one sympathetic teacher told Melba to not sit in a chair near the windows so the segregationist could not have the chance to harm her.

Melba gets acid thrown in her eye by a white student while she is walking to class and might have to wear glasses.
Melba meets her future husband at college when he was supposed to be a blind date for her roommate Mary and they married six months later.
