  • The theme for The Old Man and the Sea is getting what you want requires hard work and effort
  • This shows that pain was hard on him with everything else going on. If he wanted to take the fish home he had to deal with the pain.
  • “He lifted it as lightly as he could because his hands rebelled at the pain. Then he opened and closed them on it lightly to loosen them. He closed them firmly so they would take the pain now and would not flinch and watched the sharks come” (pg 30 pdf)
  • Hemingway's purpose for writing this book was to entertain people while also putting in some of his own life experiences. Hemingway did this by using similes, imagery, and personification. 
  • This shows that it's entertainment because it's using similes which is a narrative techniques
  • “The sail was patched with flour sacks and, furled, it looked like the flag of permanent defeat.”(pg 1 pdf). 
  • You can't do it. 
  • "Now they have beaten me, he thought. I am too old to club sharks to death. But I will try it as long as I have the oars and the short club and the tiller" (pg 31 pdf).
  • This shows that he wanted the people who thought he was done with writing that he still had something in him. He referred to the people as the sharks and himself as the old man.
