  • Madison, is everything alright? I noticed you seemed a little distracted today.
  • I can't do this! I'm a failure, I got a C on your last test and I let you and my family down. I want to go back to my old school; it was easy there.
  • Madison recently transferred to a charter school that focuses on college prep. She has always been an A-B student but recently received her first C on a math test.
  • Madison Learns About Embracing Challenges
  • So, failure is a necessary part of learning?
  • Madison can not pay attention during class. She is focused on her failure and is thinking about asking her parents about going back to her old school.

  • Ms. Williams notices a difference in Madison's behavior during class and asks her to stay after for a chat. Madison assumes she will be reprimanded for her grade.
  • Madison's Growth Mindset
  • A "B" isn't bad!
  • Ms. Williams explains to Madison the value in challenges as they relate to the learning process. Madison is beginning to realize that her negative mindset is not conducive to growth.
  • The fact that you got a C is a great thing. It means that you are being faced with a challenge-- that there is room for improvement. You have not fully understood the material yet, but there is power in knowing your weaknesses. Try your best, keep a positive attitude, and use your test feedback to improve for next time!
  • Madison feels inspired to improve and is ready to step out of her comfort zone. In fact, she is so excited to take on the challenge, she rushes home as fast as she is can. She spends the evening looking over her test and studying solutions.
  • A week later, after many nights of practice, Madison get's her new test score back from Ms. Williams. Even though she did not receive an A, she is still proud of the effort she put into studying and is looking forward to future improvements.
  • Thank you, Ms. Williams. You taught me how to embrace challenges rather than shy away from them. I look forward to all of the challenges that have yet to come this school year.
  • Great job on the test, Madison. I can see how much effort you put forth and I am so proud of your progress.
