Britain needed money to pay for its war debts. The King and Parliament believed they had the right to tax the colonies. They decided to require several kinds of taxes from the colonists to help pay for the French and Indian War.

The American colonist became more independent politically and the colonial legislators started to make decisions that were usually made by Parliament.
The colonist were angry and began to protest the British by organizing town meetings and writing angry letters to the newspapers. The sons of Liberty organized resistance to to stamp act by creating mobs of people attack the homes of the tax collectors.
In 1770, Colonial resistance led to violence. British soldiers opened fire on a mob of colonist and killed 5 people. This event was known as the Boston Massacre.
