The Aztecs were furious with Cortes after he kidnapped Montezuma. This started a war between the Aztecs and Hernan Cortes.
After two years of war, Hernan Cortes won on October 13, 1521. Overall over 200,000 people died during the war when there were 15,000,000 people in the Aztec civilization.
After Hernan Cortes won, he went back to Spain and got lots of appreciation. Tenochitclan eventually become Mexico city. Today thousands of people in Mexico celebrate a tradition called el día de los muertos (day of the dead) which originated in the Aztec traditions. El día de los muertos is celebrated to honor the dead and many people died in the war, so Mexico decided to use and expand on the tradition of the Aztecs.
