Storyboard Text

  • What was the John Peter Zenger Trial?
  • THE TRIAL OF JOHN PETER ZENGER
  • What if the John Peter Zenger Trial had not occurred?
  • I should write about the king's latest decision within our colony.  (An example of the first amendment)
  • Then . . . the latest edition of the New York Weekly Journal was printed
  • What is this!?!?! I want this burned immediately!!!!!!!
  • Stop Yelling
  • What would happen if you were too print something without government approval?
  • I don't care if you wrote the truth! By writing the truth and criticizing me you are making me look foolish and a like bad governor.
  • Without the John Peter Zenger Trial there would be no 1st amendment, and the first amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting . . . the freedom of speech, or of the press". This means that without the John Peter Zenger Trial there would be no freedom of speech or of the press.
  • What if there was no freedom of the press?
  • When John Peter Zenger printed a newspaper that included lengthy articles criticizing William Cosby and his administration Cosby was outraged and had all of the newspapers burned.
  • In Conclusion,
  • Why can't I just print the truth? It's like we have no freedom! Now what am I supposed to write about?
  • If you were to print something that went against the government then the writer would most likely be killed or imprisoned. The newspapers would also be burned. For example, when John Peter Zenger published the New York Weekly Journal on Nov 5, 1733, it contained articles criticizing William Cosby, the governor or New York, and his administration. Cosby then burned all the newspapers, placed a reward on the author's head, accused Zenger of seditious libel, and later sent Zenger to jail.
  • Freedom of the press is the right to publish newspapers, magazines, or any other printed material without any governmental restrictions. Without freedom of the press, journalists and writers would not be allowed to write what needs to be written about. They would have to write about what the government wants them to write about.
  • Why did you burn my papers? I only wrote the truth and nothing more
  • In conclusion, without the John Peter Zenger Trial many writers would not be allowed to write what they want which is freedom of the press. Without freedom of the press writers were only allowed to write about what the government told them to write about.
