"I thrust my hand toward the river. I imagined I was reaching for my mom, trying to pull her from the past... I reached for answers that might explain why I'd lost her..." (Page 32)
In Chapter 5, Magnus has to find a sword and to get it, he has to imagine that the sword represents what he wants and he thought about his mom which shows how much he loves and misses his mom.
Magnus is able to throw an entire couch to the other side of the room without trying, which a normal person can't do. This shows that Magnus has a special ability and his strength can be helpful later in the story when he is fighting someone.
"In a rage, I flipped the sofa. I didn't expect it to go far but it cartwheeled across the room and smashed into the far wall" (Page 71)
Magnus is being introduced to so many new and confusing problems that he hasn't dealt with before and he is thinking and processing everything that is happening.
"As for life making sense...I'd seen too much weirdness to expect that. Still, I had a lot of items on my 'I-don't-get-it' list." (Page 105)
"I told my new friends that I was allergic to dismemberment. They just laughed and herded me toward the combat arena." (Page 121)
Magnus has a habit of making jokes when he is in bad or dangerous situations, and this makes the readers and other characters who are with him laugh, this tells us one of Magnus's personality traits.
