Charlie Gordon wants to be smart to help himself and the world advance by having an operation. He says on page 1 " All my life I wantid to be smart and not dumb". This tells us that even though he isn't normal, he has a motivation to be smart. He also wants to help the world because on page 3 Charlie says "If it works perminint they will make everybody smart all over the wurld". This tells us that he's not only doing this operation not knowing the side effects for himself but for the world.
I'm sorry to say that Algernon has passed away...
If it happened to Algernon, it's probably gonna happen to ME!
Charlie meets a mouse named Algernon who also did the operation he did a couple months ago. He starts to feel love and compassion throughout the rising action. In the novel, Charlie said on page 6 "I felt bad to beat him and I wanted to be nice [to him]" which shows that he had love and respect for Algernon.
Hello...!, Charlie, it's________!
I need to figure out what's going to happen to me!
Becoming smart made Charlie lose his passion for other things he usually liked to do (like talking to his "friends" or work as a janitor at the company. All the downsides start showing after Charlie tells us that Mr.Donnegan said on page 12 and 13 that "it would be better for all if I left" and " eight hundred and forty names, everyone connected with the factory... All the rest demanded I be fired". People start noticing all the changes in Charlie and his good characteristics changing. That forshadows what's going to happen because becoming a genius in about 3 months is just too good to be true.
Goodbye Dr.Nemer, Dr.Strauss, and Ms.Kinnian.
I'm glad I got to help science and maybe the world make new discoveries in science.
Algernon dies and Charlie start to realize the same thing is going to happen to him because he says on page 18"I guess the same thing will happen to me". He feels sad and wants to get emotional, but knows he has to find a cure or at least what's going to happen to him.
Charlie becomes disconnected from the world in order to develop at least an idea of what's going to happen to him. He starts saying things like on page 21 "I wouldnt let her in because I didnt want her to laugh at me" to people he likes like Ms.Kinnian. It shows that he's losing all that trust and honesty we saw at the beginning of the book.
In the end, Charlie decides to run away for the better good. He says on page 22 "I bet Im the first dumb person who ever found out something importent for science" which shows that he's the same person he started out to be. A person that can find good anywhere in the world, no matter how bad a situation is.
