In the middle of the night Herbert White and his father, sat the table and played chess. A knock came soon after Herbert said, "Check Mate." Mrs. White walked to the door and opened it. Sgt. Maj. Morris walked through. Everybody sat next to the warm crackling fire, hanging on every word the soldier spoke.
Morris spoke of the monkey's paw and then threw it into the fired. Mr. White greedily reached into the fire and pulled out the monkey's paw. Mr. white thought of all the things he could do with the paw.
Mr. White raised the paw after Morris left and wished. "I wish for 200 pounds." Herbert said, "Those are ill begotten gains." Then everyone went to bed.
The next day Herbert left for work after they ate breakfast. A man came to the door, some time later, and brought the news of Herbert's death. The man gave the White's 200 pounds for Herbert's service.
Mrs. White told her husband to wish for her son to be back. Mr. White wished him back, and a knock came to the door. Herbert was back, his mother ran to the door, but before she could open it Mr. white interfered. The old man wished for his son to be dead once more .
