  • Atticus Questions Mayella
  • Stop mocking me!
  • Ma'am?
  • Atticus questions Heck Tate to get a good idea of the scene of the crime and what happened.
  • Atticus Presses Mayella
  • Who beat you up? Tom Robinson or your father?
  • Atticus believes that Bob Ewell in fact raped Mayella, so he tries to get him to say something that conflicts with the evidence.
  • Atticus Questions Tom Robinson
  • If you was a (black person) like me, you'd be scared too
  • Why were you scared?
  • Atticus tries to question Mayella, but she often evades his probing by trying to get the courtroom to sympathize with her
  • Atticus, thinking that he was going to make Mayella reveal the truth, presses her to admit that in fact her father raped her, and not Tom Robinson
  • Atticus finally questions Tom to get closure on what happened from every point of view, and finds out that in fact Mayella tried to take advantage of Tom.
