Hi we are Spanish settlers and we brought the sugar cane plant with us in 1542.
Hello my name is St. Hilarie Begorrat and I brought a special kind of sugar cane to Trinidad and in 1782; this was the Otahetie Sugar Cane.
My name is Pico De La Peyrouse and I was also important in the history of the sugar industry. I built the first sugar mill in Trinidad in 1787.
The introduction of this sugar cane plant was so successful that the sugar industry started in Port-of-Spain.
Trinidad was successfully producing sugar to sell.
In 2003 Caroni Ltd. was closed. This was because the sugar industry and the distillery were losing workers and they weren't getting anymore crops. This and the fact that Trinidad had a successful oil industry so it made sense to close the doors of he sugar industry in Trinidad the closure of Caroni Ltd. meant the end of the great sugar era in Trinidad.
The sugar industry in Trinidad continued to grow and there was the development of sugar factories such as Usine St. Madeline in Princes Town and Brechin Castle in Couva by 1937. The sugar industry was so successful that there was the creation of the country's Distillery which was called the Caroni Distillery in 1918.
