Tim surveys the thick Vietnamese jungle for enemies. All is going well, until he spots a Viet-Cong just up ahead at the trail. Tim hesitates for a second and realizes what he needs to do.
Tim pulls out a grenade and throws it at the soldier blowing up at his feet, killing him. Tim seemed to be visibly upset after this encounter because it happened all of a sudden, and it was a quick death. Possibly making him feel guilty for what he had done.
In the chapter, Spin, Azar gives a little Vietnamese boy a candy bar, showing the kindness that soldiers have for the civilians. Sanders was also described as picking lice out of a boy's hair. This shows that not all of the soldiers were hellbent on killing vietnamese soldiers all of the time.
EVEN?!
In the chapter Spin, Kiowa, Rat, and Dave were depicted as dancing and making loud noises in the rain in a village that they were occupying. This showed the more happy sides to the war, as in there wasn't anything to worry about in the moment and the soldiers felt as though all of the stress in the world is lifted off of their soldiers.
In the chapter the Dentist, Tim describes Curt Lemon as a strong soldier, mostly just a facade of what he actually was inside, but a strong soldier nonetheless. But as soon as he gets into that dentist's chair, he completely faints. This shows that although soldiers are strong, some have weaknesses that can seem miniscule at times.
In the chapter enemies, Lee Strunk and Dave Jensen got into a fight over a missing Jackknife. THings got bloody and both ended up with broken noses in the end. This shows that the Viet Cong weren't the only people soldiers had to fight during their time in Vietnam. They sometimes got into conflicts with their squad mates which can be problematic, considering the fact that they are supposed to be working together. This can compromise their mission and put their entire platoon in danger.
